Das Westdeutsche Tumorzentrum WTZ ist das einzige der acht Zentren des Deutschen Konsortiums für Translationale Krebsforschung (DKTK) in Nordrhein-Westfalen und eines von 13 anerkannten Spitzenzentren für Tumorforschung, -diagnostik und -therapie nach dem US-amerikanischen Vorbild eines Comprehensive Care Center (CCC) in Deutschland. Als Teil des Universitätsklinikums Essen zählt es die gesamte Metropole Ruhr zu seiner Patientenbasis. Das Einzugsgebiet einiger Fachkliniken geht weit über die Grenzen Nordrhein-Westfalens und Deutschlands hinaus.
Im Westdeutschen Tumorzentrum (WTZ) kooperieren die onkologischen Zentren der Universitätsmedizin Essen und des Universitätsklinikums Münster für die Weiterentwicklung der Krebsmedizin und eine optimale Patientenversorgung.
